In class we briefly discussed a photograph and attempted to attach meaning to it while having no background knowledge as to what was going on. This interested me and I began thinking about how famous photograhs' purpose are based on the meaning we place with them. If we have no previous knowledge on a photograph it could be completely pointless. For example, the photo above may just be another picture of the flag if the viewers were unaware of the history associated with it.
I agree with what Big Daddy Dail is saying. To people from the United States, this picture symbolizes freedom and courage. But to people from other countries, they might not understand the emphasis and power behind this photograph.
ReplyDeleteI think that every American has seen this photo and knows what it means to the United States because it has been in every history book and we was taught about at an early age. But if you show someone this photo from another country then they probably wont know what it means.
